How to Use a Bolus?
Bolus administration is a safe and effective procedure when performed with proper technique. In this guide, we explain bolus application techniques step by step.
Required Equipment
Bolus Applicator (Bolus Gun)
- May have a metal or plastic body
- Must be selected according to bolus size
- Must be kept clean and well-maintained
Personal Protective Equipment
- Gloves
- Appropriate clothing
Pre-Application Preparation
1. Preparing the Animal
- Restrain the animal securely
- Minimize stress levels
- Secure control of the head
2. Equipment Check
- Ensure the applicator is clean
- Use the bolus only if it is undamaged
- Check the expiration date
3. Loading the Bolus into the Applicator
- Place the bolus at the tip of the applicator
- Ensure it is seated firmly
- Check that it will not fall out
Step-by-Step Application
Step 1: Positioning
Position yourself on the left side of the animal or in front of its head. Hold the applicator in your right hand while your left hand controls the animal's head.
Step 2: Opening the Mouth
- Place your left hand over the animal's nostrils
- Insert your thumb into the side of the mouth, in the toothless area
- Apply gentle pressure to open the mouth
Step 3: Placing the Applicator
- Insert the applicator from the side of the mouth, behind the teeth
- Advance it over the tongue
- Position it at the base of the tongue
Step 4: Releasing the Bolus
- Activate the trigger mechanism of the applicator
- Release the bolus onto the tongue
- Slowly withdraw the applicator
Step 5: Ensuring Swallowing
- Hold the animal's head up for a few seconds
- Observe the swallowing motion
- Make sure the bolus has been swallowed
Safety Precautions
Do's
- Move calmly and decisively
- Restrain the animal properly
- Always verify swallowing
- Clean the applicator after every use
Don'ts
- Do not rush
- Do not try to force the mouth open
- Do not insert the applicator too deep
- Do not administer to an unconscious animal
Common Mistakes
1. Wrong Angle
Holding the applicator at an upward angle instead of keeping it level can cause the bolus to get stuck in the throat.
2. Inadequate Restraint
If the animal moves, the bolus may go to the wrong place, or the animal may bite the applicator.
3. Not Checking Swallowing
The bolus may remain in the mouth or be spit out. Always make sure it has been swallowed.
4. Administering to a Recumbent Animal
In recumbent animals, there is a risk of aspiration (the bolus entering the windpipe). Whenever possible, administer to standing animals.
Special Cases
Administration to Downer Cows
- Elevate the animal's head
- Check the level of consciousness
- Ensure the swallowing reflex is present
- Be cautious due to the risk of aspiration
Administration to Calves
- Use an applicator appropriate for calf size
- Prefer smaller boluses
- Check the swallowing reflex
Post-Application
- Observation: Monitor the animal for a few minutes
- Record: Log the date and time of application
- Cleaning: Clean and store the equipment
- Follow-up: Monitor for the expected effect
Troubleshooting
If the Bolus Was Not Swallowed
- Do not try again (risk of trauma)
- Check where the bolus is located
- Seek veterinary assistance if needed
Gagging/Coughing
- Stop the application
- Wait for the animal to calm down
- Try a different technique if necessary
Bolus application technique requires practice. We recommend getting support from an experienced person during your first applications.
